I’m using the newsmag theme and when I’ve edited the 404 page in WordPress – Appearance – Theme File Editor nothing changes the 404 page. Where do I change the message on the 404 page? I just want to splay a custom message and send the visitor to an index page where they can select the page they are looking for.

Unfortunately, the 404 page on Newsmag can not be edited, as on the Newsapper theme, where everything is editable with the theme builder. Newsmag theme use old templates and for 404 page, you can choose the template you want from the theme panel > template pages – https://prnt.sc/mcmN6TgzN6v0 nw if you only want to change the text, you can use the translate section under the theme panel and replace the current text with a different one https://prnt.sc/23nwbS78Mb64 – https://prnt.sc/6CIUtH14NtBq
Another alternative if you want a custom page for your 404 is to edit the 404.php page in a child theme.

Thanks, that worked for changing the text. If i wanted to direct visits to another page do i just put that page name instead of HOME?

Unfortunately, if you want to redirect the users to a different page, then you will need to use a redirect for the link from that button to the 404 page.
