The setting you are mentioning from the Yoast Seo plugin should prevent the sub-pages from displaying in the search results – https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-do-i-noindex-urls/#archives
Maybe you need to clear your cache, and wait for google to re-index your website and then the results should display properly.
