The theme, for some reason, uses the caption for any excerpt, rather than the first paragraph of the post, which is meant to happen in WordPress. Can this be fixed, or is it just a flaw of the theme, or a quirk of my particular website. Thanks.

Do you have set on that post an excerpt -> https://i.imgur.com/qy7XeGg.png ? if yes, then the option will not work, the option is working only for post content to make it as an excerpt.
If this is not the case, make sure that you do not have a plugin conflict, please deactivate ALL plugins except tagDiv plugins, also if you are using child theme or cache plugin, deactivate them, clear all cache and try again.

No. It uses the image caption on all posts. In fact, the only way to stop it using the image caption is to manually put in the excerpt.
I deactivated all plugins, apart from tagdiv. Still does it. This changed around the time you changed your themes to support gutenberg.

I’m wondering if this issue has been resolved. As stated, for some reason, your theme uses the caption of a photo, when it’s placed at the top of an article, for the excerpt, unless the excerpt is manually inserted.
