How can I change the excerpt length on the homepage ?

I found the excerpt lenghts on the theme panel, but it automatically grabs the first lines.
I don’t want that so I put in a custom excerpt.
But then it’s not all even, so how can I cut it after so many words, so that the custom excerpt doesnt override the theme settings?
