For posts there is an option to show excerpt portion and that is optional basically.
It is important for search engines and normally for readers.
In our current news, we have a separate box we call “lead” which works as a “subtitle” slash “excerpt”.
In your theme, I see there is also an optional subtitle box and it does show in the actual post in light gray color. Is this something normally used in the posts? How different is it from excerpt? Why excerpts don’t show in the posts in your theme? Do search engines have any use for subtitles?
If I understand correctly, if I skip excerpt portion all together the script will take first XX number of words in the text and populate hidden “excerpt” field for search engines meta. Is it right?

Excerpts are usually taken from post content and are used as a small description for that post when it is displayed on modules. Search engines does not look at excerpts when a site is dislodged in SERPS, they look at post’s meta. The theme does not control these meta tags and to set them properly you have to use a plugin like SEO By Yoast which is tested and works fine. The theme does not handle SEO, it only handle site’s layout. By this I mean how/when a post will be displayed, how many posts will be displayed on the page, which will be the layout for that page etc…

Can you still explain what is subtitle for? Basically you have 3 fields for the same thing: excerpt, description, subtitle.
And from what I tested, excerpt field, when filled manually, still did not show in the post.

The subtitle is used as an alternative title for a post. In some situation it may be required a subtitle to reveal the main idea behind a post. This filed can or cannot be used, depending by user’s preference.
Excerpts will not show in post because they are not meant to be displayed there. Excerpts are only displayed on modules as I’ve explained above.
