external featured images

Hi,

I used a plugin called Featured Image From URL to add featured images using external links (in order to save space on server). For such posts, the thumbnails don’t display on page.

I use Auto Post Thumbnail Pro; which sets the featured image, and then the featured image gets placed onto page with a template supporting use of featured image as primary photo on post.

Nelio Content plugin did the excellent job for me! As far as I know, Auto Post Thumbnail will generate featured image by uploading it to your server but I want to use external image as featured image to save space!

My story is similar to by1411’s !!!
I was using Nelio Content but it became deprecated so now I’m using featured Image from URL plugin and it worked perfectly in my last theme ‘Vantage’ by SiteOrigin.

I don’t want to fill my hosting space with lots of pics. I prefer to use external pics. And I think that’s the future way IMHO

We have large news portals, not blogs.

We need the local copy of images and thumbs in order to actually have the thumbs on our system to use on indexes and front page vs resizing existing large images bad for speed/SEO; and also for Google News, Bing News, Apple News, social sharing, etc.

Of course, we are only loading content across our own sites, not from other people.

We also have dedicated server, so storage not an issue; plus if we only loaded elements from external sites without local copy we’d get broken images over time. many of our sites have been online up to 17 years, so a little different issue than for most of you 🙂

In any case, glad you found something that works for you. My answer was only on how to get an external or ‘first image in post’ into the featured image slot and use for thumbs and local elements in theme.

Any news on this ? Featured Image From URL does not work for me and neither the external linked pictures for that matter … Cannot ALL be on my WP server – I am using Imgur as CDN for most of my images. IMHO it’s time that WP supports this natively.
