facebook url being appended to all blog post urls – causing 404s

Hello.
Firstly I’ll say that I’m not blaming anyone one for this, but I find it very odd and consistant enough for a thought that it may be something to do with ‘automation’ embedded in the theme – so please be patient!

So I’m checking my google analytics and I have a 404 for (I’d say) every post that I have ever generated – there are others, picture files etc, but mostly blogs…

So what I’m getting is the first part of the url but then the consistant addon of my facebook url…

so it would be
https://<domain>/<postname>/https://<facebookurl>

Needless to say, these links will never work since there’s two https:// references in the same line…

It seems very odd to me and a thought occurs that maybe one of the sharing plugins is giving some trouble?

I have the Top Article Sharing turned on in Theme Options and a third party Plugin called Super Socializer installed.
I appreciate you can only comment on your own so I ask if you have ever come across this issue and if so can you advise please?

Many thanks

Hi

We didn’t got a similar report so fart and I am not sure why you have these errors or what generate these links. Try to deactivate all plugins except Visual Composer, clear all caches then test your site again and check if the errors are still there. Noe that it may take some time until google will index the site again and probably the links won’t disappear immediately.

Thanks!

Hello
I’ve looked further at this and am now concerned!

What I have done is to clone the site to a dev area and use an on-demand crawler (Screaming Frog in this instance) to see what has happened.

I have deactivated ALL the plugins, whilst still using the Newspaper 7.3 Child theme and I still get 404’s… Screaming Frog gives a specific of:
Type: AHREF with the original url to the destination url, the destination url in one instance (and repeated a few times with different urls) http://dev.aclwebservices.com/b47/spada-pilgrim-everyday-motorcycle-boots/www.

It is only when I swap themes that these 404’s disappear!

It would appear on the face of it then, that the Newspaper theme is raising the challenge?

Advice asap would be appreciated – I can of course give you access to the dev area for your research, please provide a secure method to give you the info.
many thanks

HI

I am not aware of Screaming Frog functionality as we didn’t made any tests with it and I can’t say how accurate are the reports. However when I’ve made a data structure test for this post: http://dev.aclwebservices.com/b47/spada-pilgrim-everyday-motorcycle-boots/ I didn’t found any broken link: http://screencast.com/t/9OWkPQARxXP Also in browser’s console is no 404 error: http://screencast.com/t/qobYvWlb
I am not sure why google analytics picks those links but you can try to regenerate your sitemap and send it to google: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/enable-xml-sitemaps-in-the-wordpress-seo-plugin/
You can also send us the login details at contact@tagdiv.com and we will inspect this issue as soon as possible. Also give us access to web-master tool se we can have a look to those link: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2453966?hl=en

Thanks!

Hello.
I’ll agree it’s all rather odd, but I hope you’ll excuse me having to start somewhere!
Screaming Frog is a standalone Mac app that scans HTML from scratch – there’s a free version that crawls the first 500 urls… Check out https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/

What Screaming Frog shows seems to be reflected in the 404’s in Google Console – despite the seeming fact that these malformed urls are NOT showing in the XML Sitemap!

Plainly, I need to resolve this and my first thoughts was that it’s a script on a social networking item – Socializer was the firm favourite, but I’ve disabled that on the live site and retried it and still I ‘see’ 404’s.

On the test site, with all the plugins disabled, Screaming Frog still gives 404’s (but the sitemap not)…

Something is happening, and very possibily ‘on-demand’ by crawlers, but what?

Many thanks
