New newspaper theme user. Generally love the theme. Have been looking high and low though for a fix to a FB issue that only started occuring after installing the newspaper theme. Previously used Jetpack sharing, Yoast SEO, and the twenty fifteen WP theme and had no issue with FB always recognizing the post feature image and post title when posts were shared on FB. Since installing newspaper in the last week, FB no longer recognizes my post feature image or post title. Have tried a few things that have not worked including:
– deactivating sharing on Jetpack. No difference in the results.
– completed the post Social tab on Yoast SEO to force FB to recognize the FB image and title, although I never had to do this in my previous setup. No difference in the results.
– tried loading some other FB open graph plugins one by one which I never used before, but none of the them gave the results I was expecting, so I ended up deleting them one by one.
– tried using the FB developer debugger. It only returns one warning: “The ‘og:url’ property should be explicitly provided, even if a value can be inferred from other tags.”
Now I notice that the FB debugger is picking up the correct post title, but still is not picking up the post feature image. On the FB debugger under og: image, it shows thumbnails for every picture in the post except the post feature image.
Appreciate any thoughts on what’s happening here and how to fix it.
Thanks
Hi,
We recommend to use SEO by Yoast plugin for the og: as the theme doesn’t control that. Please check this without any plugins active, except of the Visual Composer plugin and SEO by Yoast, clear cache and check if the share works fine. Also you can test using fb debugger(manually fetch new scrap info.) and see if the featured image is correct for one of your posts. Check also the page source if your open graph meta date are correct – http://screencast.com/t/uhrSwqinmvzv It may take a while until fb will update open graphs.
Thanks!
Ok, did the one by one deactivation of every plugin I have and isolated the issue to Visual Composer. When I deactivate Visual Composer, Facebook reads my Yoast SEO open graph tags perfectly. When Visual Composer is activated, Facebook totally ignores the Yoast SEO open graph tags and does not pick up post titles or post images which is really unacceptable. This would also explain why I only starting seeing this issue on Facebook after installing the Newspaper theme. Is Visual Composer conflicting with the Yoast SEO open graph tags, and if so, is there a way to remove the conflict?
Not sure how integrated visual composer is with the Newspaper them, so I will also see if there is a separate support page for Visual Composer.
Hi,
Please provide your site url so I can check it using fb debugger and take a look to the og meta data.
Also note that it may take a while for fb to update the meta data and make sure you test this using just Visual Composer and SEO by Yoast active(make sure you activate og – http://screencast.com/t/vjuFXaJNPoVA ). What version of Visual Composer you use? The latest version provided with the theme is 4.7.1.1.
Thanks!
Ok, I think I’m back in business now. The version of Composer that was included in my download was 4.6.2. I just upgraded to 4.7.1.1 and now it seems to be playing nicely with Facebook again. I just purchased and downloaded the bundled them on 9/21, so it’s hard to believe that one of the critical bundled plugins was that far behind on the version. Thanks for your help.
