I believe it is 483 x 1074 pixels. It used to be on version 4. I’m pretty sure it is in the documentation though, so perhaps you can look through that in order to find the current best answer.

Unfortunately there is no best size for featured images. The only thing that needs to be taken in consideration is the size of the thumbnails used. Here is a list of thumbnail sizes used in our theme: http://screencast.com/t/a23lRsRg6 Now you will have to decide what elements are going to be used and what thumbnails the theme uses for that particular element. Then simply make sure your image is bigger than the biggest thumbnail you want to use. Anything above that dimension is up to you for quality/clarity of your images.
