When I installed the theme a “featured” category was created. I was already using another category called Must Read for this functionality. Is it possible to use by older “Must Read” category to filter posts through the theme’s “Featured” functionality?

You’ll have to search in theme files and for all references to it and replace it. The featured category is called within the theme by name and slug.

In that case, will it be easier to just deleted the theme’s “Featured” category and rename mine to Featured and rename the Slug to featured?

You can rename your category”Must read” to “Featured” and rename the slug also delete Featured category like you say.
Or rename Featured category in td_config.php with your category: http://screencast.com/t/feVRRlmjWdh
You can do this as it is easier for you.
