Fonts, Default vs Google vs Google Self Hosted vs Custom vs Typekit

This applies to the above tag div documentation.

It explains how to use the different font options very well, but I wonder if anybody could throw some light on the relative performance consequences?

Though I only have one extra font in my theme panel set up, fonts always seem to take up a large part of the page load time.

Questions;

Are the default Roboto and Open Sans Google fonts built in/self hosted or are they called from Google? Is the family Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif built in/self hosted?

I tried installing the google self hosted fonts plug in, but the page still seems to be calling them externally. Is there something in the theme that means the self hosting approach will not work?

In terms of speed (and any other issues) what are the relative merits of google vs custom vs typekit?

Thanks

Native font stack best way to go these days as no load time penalty.

We haven’t made any testing in the matter up to this point. Maybe some other users can share their thoughts or experiences.

The default fonts the theme uses are loaded from Google, if they are disabled in the theme panel the theme will not load them anymore. Then you can use other font implementations for the website, test to see the differences.
