Hi,
Is there anyway to have the article image thumbnails in the footer with the “even more news” article links without using a featured image in the posts? We like using adsense square ads in the posts instead of featured images, but would like to have the small square article image thumbnails in the footer with each link. To put another way, can we disable the post featured images but have them in the footer.

Yes you can hide the featured image in single posts from theme panel > post settings: http://screencast.com/t/zi6RcqOGMlPo Like this it will be displayed only on modules, not in post content.
