how to get rid of the excerpts in the sidebar widgets?

Hi,

You could use a block which doesn’t have excerpt or hide it via css or setting it to none from theme panel > excerpts: http://screencast.com/t/y2Rg6V7G (note that this option will change the excerpt on module site-wide)
