Getting a over 1.6M Script Executions to wp-admin/admin-ajax.php

We were contacted by our host as we are seeing an unusually high number of script executions (over 1.6 million) each month to wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. Our site averages about 10k visitors per month, so seems very high. We are currently on the current version of the theme (9.7.2). This only seems to be impacting one of the three sites we have running this theme. I tried to find a related post and saw others had issues with Visual Composer causing this. Is there any fix for this other then rolling back to an older version of the theme?

We have same issue.. but 800.000/month.
Our host required us to move to a higher hosting plan but we’re hitting the roof again of this plan

@rrystrom digging into this further, each of the blocks throughout the theme use ajax, so having filters in blocks, etc. will cause a spike. Since I’m only seeing this impact one of our site (oncozine.com), I went through and made sure we are disabling all features on blocks and category pages that use ajax. The only filter we were using was on the Category page, so I disabled that. @tagDiv any other steps I can take? Sorry for error in my original post I meant TagDiv Composer, not Visual Composer.

Same problem here. Was NOT getting admin-ajax hits on home page, but saw it on post pages. Turned off the Ajax view counter, and it went away on the page I checked.

We also had to move to a higher hosting plan due to the CPU hit on admin-ajax. And, we hit the ceiling of that plan as well. And that was with the Heartbeat Control installed and completely turned off.

The issue went away for a short time after the tagdiv team made an adjustment on our site last month (not sure what was done) but it returned this month. I also completely disabled the heartbeat and my host had me block two bots that were causing high hits. Not sure if this is resolved yet.

Working with @Simion with tagDiv support, he was able to identify the issue with our sites being caused the AdRotate Pro plugin causing a high number of hits to the Admin-Ajax. If you have this plugin, go into Settings and then select the Stats tab. Change the “How to track stats” option from “AdRotate Tracker” to any other option (I used Google Global Tag).
