Google Analytics "Tracking not installed"

I’ve used the theme to insert the Google Analytics code and it correctly puts it in just before the </head>, but when I go to my GA profile and look up the tracking code it says “Status: Tracking Not Installed

The Google Analytics tracking code has not been detected on your website’s home page. For Analytics to function, you or your web administrator must add the code to each page of your website.”

I found on another forum that someone had put www before his domain name in the GA settings and taking that out fixed his problem, but that has not worked for me.

Others say that it takes a while for the stats to start showing up in reports, but if it were working I should be seeing some action on the live view (I’m not) and I shouldn’t be getting the “tracking not installed” error above.

Any other ideas?

If you look at the page source for your pages, and you see the correct tracking code, then the theme is inserting it in the head properly. The theme doesn’t connect to GA, rather GA reads the code from the page when you identify your site via your GA account. If GA is unable to read the code, it’s very likely the code inserted is not correct or GA has not yet added your site to its tracking platform (wait time).

Obviously all the theme can do is insert the code you provide into your head section. It doesn’t do anything else with GA.

In our case it did take 3 days to start tracking properly.

Not sure that helps. But you are correct in that unless you have specified your site to run as http://www.yoursite.xyz (e.g., in webmaster tools, and your internal linking setup, such as for local SSL cert, etc.), most WP sites run without the redundant www (http://yoursite.zyx). SO, that should line up with the code you’re using and how you setup your code in the GA system … meaning, be consistent 🙂

Aha. Working now. Was just a matter of waiting for it to start working properly, took about 24 hours. It’s a shame Google gives you what amounts to a spurious error message saying that your tracking is not installed when it clearly is. Oh well.

Yeah. Same with Google Authorship.
You should see the pain I’m going through right now for custom paid Google Search box in popup modal, having messed up styles. Ugh.
