Google Rich Cards and JSON-LD Markup

Totally ignorant here about how to insert structured data as JSON-LD markup. I really need to figure out how to insert it for recipes. But in the meantime I just created this markup for a product on my website using Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper. What do I do with it? Do I insert it into the header code area of the product’s landing page?

And more importantly, if I insert it on the landing page for this product is, will it screw up the Newspaper theme? I don’t want to slow anything down. But I think my recipes, especially, are going to suffer in mobile searches without it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help shed light on this!

Hi,

I found this detailed and useful guide that you can read for more information, it contains code implementation instructions that you could try as well

Thanks

Thanks, Simion. That is a really useful article — better than the ones I found. A couple questions:

1. If I add JSOD-LD markup to my posts or pages, will it get overwritten when I update the theme next time? I’m not working in a child theme… That article says this but I’m not sure if it is true for Newspaper:

To implement schema using microdata, essentially you will be taking your existing HTML and adding various attributes and possibly elements. You will need to edit your theme for the following examples. If you are using a theme created by somebody else, then please make sure you create a child theme, else your changes could be overwritten if the author updates their theme.

Hello,

Indeed if you edit the theme code, when updating, the files will be rewritten. Unfortunately there is no update proof way of altering the theme files, sorry.

Thanks.

Thanks Bogdan. I don’t want to remove the existing theme markup for articles. I just want to add the markup for recipes, products, and reviews.

So…

1) It sounds like if I add schema markup to posts and pages, the theme updates will overwrite them. Did I understand that correctly?

2) If #1 is true, how do you suggest people add schema markup? Do they have to make a child theme first?

3) and… Now that I already have my site up and running, should I be switching to creating a child theme? I’d rather not, but I’m worried about not having a way to add the schema markup.

4) When I make Tagdiv recommended changes to increase my site speed, will those get overwritten with every new update of the theme?

Hi,

You can add the code in the header through a child theme, that way it will not be lost when the theme is updated
https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/
Create a child theme and copy the header file located in the main theme folder, inside the child theme folder.
This is the purpose of having a child theme, to make customization to the theme without losing them after updating. All the files that can be modified through a child theme are mentioned in the guide.
More information about child themes in general here

Thanks
