Hello TD team,
We are using wordpress multisite and use your theme for our subdomains (where our content gets posted ex. http://greece.greekrporter.com). We would like to use the newspaper theme in our homepage too, but have been trying to do this for a long time with no success, thus I am asking for your help. Basically what we need is for the theme to be able to grab the image from the post (because when it looks for the featured image the url is different since it is uploaded into a another blog and then inserted to our main homege via the sitewide tags plugin).
We tried using the “get the image” plugin, but it didn’t work. There are themes that support this (grab image from within the post) like the one we are using now (ex: http://GreekReporter.com).
I don’t believe it is hard to achieve, but maybe since you know better how the images work in your theme you might have an idea on how to do this. Please, if you can offer some advice or a way to do it, it will really help us and we will be able to use your theme on our homepage that we always wanted.
Thank you so much in advance!

Hello,
You can try with Automatic Featured Image Posts plugin or Auto Post Thumbnail PRO from here http://codecanyon.net/item/auto-post-thumbnail-pro/4322624
this will get the first image from post and use it as featured image.
Hope this help!
We use the auto post thumbnail pro, because we have a news network where we have this exact issue with content being syndicated from the MAIN website to satellite sites with localized content – local news has local images, national news images load from the main server. The low-cost Auto Post Thumbnail Pro works perfectly to grab image and make featured so that images appear site wide where we want them to even if the main image loading from mothership. Highly recommended!
Thank you Marius and Christopher. Christopher, I admire your kindness to always help here, voluntarily.
I tried both plugins but for some reason they don’t work with newspaper. They work with twenty fourteen (the wp standard), which makes me think that your theme might be handling the images in a distinctively different way than others.
I should note that I used the free version of the auto post thumbnail plugin, but it says that it does the same as the paid version.
Is there any other way to achieve having images from our wp subddomains on the homepage that you might think?
Thank you so much for your help in advance!
Anastasios
I’m using the plugin on both our sites running Newspaper, but we use the paid version (recommend using the paid version!). It’s cheap enough and we use it all the time.
Note it won’t grab “first image from post” if you already set featured image and are having theme load the featured image above/outside the post block. It will work when you have a local or external image PLACED into the body text of the actual post box.
We had to do regenerate thumbnails to have it build the images for pre-existing posts, and then it works on FUTURE posts just fine.
Actually, we’re using three plugins to solve image issues:
1) Auto Post Thumbnail PRO
2) Regenerate Thumbnails
3) Thumbnail Upscale
for us these 3 plugins solved all the issues we were having in trying to replicate the old way that thumbs were generated (e.g., with the deprecated “TimThumb”).
@anastasios
thanks for kind words. Happy to help. As I’ve noted in past, I’m sort of “paying it forward” from all the help I got over the years in sorting things out when I could not solve something and others pointed me in the right direction. Also, I’ve been doing some work lately where I have little snippets of time where I’m basically waiting for something to process for 5-9 minutes and need to watch it but can’t do much else while waiting, so I pop in here. Also we’re getting ready to retrofit some of our working sites with Newspaper, so have been keeping an eye on any weird voodoo issues I should be on top of before switching from Woo Canvas to Newspaper for those production sites. 🙂
Christopher, I can’t thank you enough. The pro version works great! You solved one of our sites biggest issues and we ll be using newspaper soon on our homepage too! THANK YOU SO MUCH and if you are local to Cali I will be more than happy to buy you a beer!!!
my pleasure. Glad I could help. I have extra time right now to pop in here, which will be ending again soon; so glad I could pass along some of my own “been there solved that” suggestions. I should put a “tip jar” on here 😉
