Gutenberg and newspaper theme

I am interested in what would happen with newspaper theme when Gutenberg will arrive in WordPress. What are you going to do, because as far as I know from the information around, Gutenberg will eliminate shortcuts and it will change WordPress as we know today. Most theme, shortcuts, plugins would probably not work. What about your themes, your td-composer?

Shortcodes won’t stop working when Gutenberg rolls out; as millions of sites would break that use shortcodes for ad modules, date hooks, site builders, etc. Shortcodes won’t work in Gutebberg blocks except perhaps “shortcode block” which is where the worry seems to be coming from for a lot of folks. Meaning, if you built a post block in Gutenberg, a shortcode might not work “inside” that block to avoid potential loops.

I had to revisit this topic after testing my site on a staging site with the current version of Gutenberg plugin (2.5.0) and I hope the tagdiv team can chip in, rather than expecting the same hopeless reply of “we don’t intend to use this plugin in future”. For once, as expected, the shortcodes associated with the theme are missing from the Gutenberg editor, but I mostly only use the smart list shortcode a lot and I had to type [td_smart_list_end] in a shortcode block at every instance of a new test post which was rather annoying (and even seems complicated for existing post). Second, I don’t know if this is due to the plugin or the theme, I tried to edit a published post and sometimes it would not show preview unless I made it into a draft, where then it would work.

My request to the team is to start considering how to integrate their features that are in the classic WordPress editor to the Gutenberg editor to save their clients a lot of agony and misery when the editor rolls out in WordPress core (5.0). Though I should point out I only had installed td composer and td newsletter only plus several other plugins that do not come with the theme.

But I still like it that there is the classic editor for now (with Gutenberg installed) so I could just switch back to classic and make the changes there. Still, this should be in the tagdiv team’s priority list.

Thanks Bogdan. That’s some good reassurance. As tagdiv team, what do you feel about the editor?

I like the new features coz I have used Medium in the past year with another publication and I did not find it hard to use. If the Newspaper theme can be integrated into it with no hustle, and once all the issues surrounding the editor are addressed, I am prepared to make the switch.

Good to know there will be updates to support Gutenberg. I’m playing around with it and the only thing missing at the moment is the support to make an image full-width (i.e the option won’t show on Newsmag. It’s hidden if the theme doesn’t support it yet). Apart from it, I haven’t seen any noticeable issues or anything with Newsmag

I think it’s the wrong way to do not Support Gutenberg…I think everthing needs to be Supported what is coming to be Build in WordPress…Big names like SiteOrigin will fully Supporrt it to, hope tagdiv theme will think about it.

I wanted to chime back in on this thread and share that I installed Gutenberg on my Newspaper staging site about a week ago, found no errors, and installed it on my live production site.

I have not experienced any errors thus far with my Newspaper theme and Gutenberg, and I’ve been loving using the new editor to customize the format of my posts. My hope is that further releases will not conflict with Gutenberg, as I am extremely excited about this new iteration of the editor.

@sbconle it’s good to hear it works for you. I use some theme shortcodes which disappear when I install Gutenberg. So I am waiting until it is rolled into the WordPress Core and the tagdiv team integrates the shortcodes into the editor to switch fully.

I also tried the new Gutenberg in my site and all the web is working fine except for the composer which BTW you cannot edit (its all a CSS). Hopefully the Tagdiv people are working in make it work, because the wordpress 5.0 is getting close to release day

Hi there @bogdan any idea when are you going to release the new version with the Gutenberg compatibility? WordPress 5 is close enough to start preparing our sites for that. Moreover too get use to the new interface and the blocks in the composer

So… Gutemberg in a week with WP5. Any news about Newspaper compatibility?
