I am an fairly new wordpress user. I do only a little coding, and mostly use WYSIWYG editing. But I cannot figure out how edit the categories at the top of the page on my Newspaper 9 woprdpress theme. Can anyone help me?

That would be the main header menu. In the menu you can place any categories you want from the ones you have created, it can also display pages, posts, custom links etc.

You can create your own menus and set them, the theme has three menu spots. In the top bar, in the header (main menu) and in the footer.
