Hi SamuelWright,
There is an option for it in Wp panel, like this: http://screencast.com/t/P6f47b8H . First of all, please make sure that you have activate the link target button on screen option and then, in your custom link you have the desired option and you have to check it -> Open link in a new window/tab!
