Is there a way to include headlines from other websites (including a thumbnail photo) in addition to the other main articles in the theme? Or would I just/only be able to include a RSS list?
(Note: I don’t have the theme running yet on my site, wondering for future reference.)

Hi,
Not quite sure what you want to do but if you want to add posts or articles located and linking to other site’s on your homepage, I’m afraid that the theme doesn’t have an option for that. You could try to find and use a plugin for it.
For rss you can use the the wp rss widget: http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Widgets#Using_RSS_Widgets
