I have 2 problems
Nr. 1.
I want to add a widget sidebar to my homepage, but no matter what sidebar I select, nothing shows in the widget box.

1. The sidebar will show once you saved the page and click to view it

If it has widgets in it it should be displayed, you can add any of the available widgets.
2. There is a background color setting for the main menu, in the theme panel

So you can set a color of your choosing for the main menu.

So you want the header menu to have a color of your choosing, the theme panel settings will allow that. You can set a background color for the menu, also hover/active color.
If those settings are not what is needed, explain in more details how you want the menu to look. Maybe it could be done with CSS.
How are you implementing the ads? if by a single image that may not be the best element to use. Try using a simple text element instead, in which you insert the ad banner with a link, it will be more responsive

As for the menu. I found the problem.
The meniu was a custom link. So I think the meniu was highlighted because it was recognized as a link, I removed the link and now its all the same color.

Glad you could solve that. Try to set a global block header template in the theme panel, that should apply to those widgets as well

Hi Simon, that worked great.
However something else came up.
I just noticed that if I use Jetpack’s free CDN service to load my images from their server, on the homepage my banners now get resize to a smaller scale.
Is there any way to fix this? Or can you suggest another plugin to optimize images?
Glad it worked. There are many plugins that can optimize images. Try other plugins and see which one works best. I have not tested any unfortunately, but you could take a look at some guides and comparisons
