I really like how the stories are laid out on the frontage of theverge.com with horizontal and vertical blocks automatically integrating. Is there a way to make this layout on WordPress?

I’m not sure if this is exactly what you want but you can try to use row in row and split the second row something like this – http://screencast.com/t/PmUjIHEXu it is the only way you can do this with Newspaper theme. Please note the tagdiv blocks were designed to be used on 1,2 or 3 columns.

Hmm- not quite what I had in mind. Is there a way to show the headline, image and except in a 2 or 3 column layout with a horizontal sorting instead of vertical sorting?

Not sure how you want to do this, you can check our demo and see how tagdiv blocks can be used and how they look on 1,2 or 3 columns. You can test this using Visual Composer rows and also limit articles for each block so maybe you will achieve the look that you want.

You have to play, know and move the blocks and modules. Its quite possible to make a frontpage like The Verge with this theme. I grabbed a couple of ideas from that site.
