Is there an easy hack / solution to structure the main slider on the homepage to work similarly to the slider found on http://newscore2.radiumthemes.com/ (one main big hero image & a small preview of the new featured image & upon click it expands out – again look at http://newscore2.radiumthemes.com/)

Unfortunately there is no easy way to replicate that particular slider. It has to be coded to work like that,
but you can use our big grid slider block: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper/big-grid-slide/ which is similar to the one you pointed out.
