How do I create a Sidebar in post pages & set Category Top Posts content?

Hi all.
After much struggling I seem to have got the Newspaper 6 theme set up. For my Homepage, About and Contact I have used the pre-set page templates. The problem is I just cannot get the sidebar to appear on any of my post pages. I’ve gone to my postpage and used Visual Composer to set the right sidebar template, and also to set a widgetised sidebar but nothing works. When i look in Appearance – Widgets there is no sidebar box. Any ideas on how to get this showing?

Also, At the top of the homepage is the Category Top Posts Box which shows highlights of your content. How do I set it and select what is featured in the box?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

You can create a custom sidebar – http://screencast.com/t/ncZ1OaxNLyHR set it for your posts and add widgets to it from Widgets section – http://screencast.com/t/Rgd7GeC3Cd
If you want to use a custom sidebar on your page using Widgetised Sidebar you can set it – http://screencast.com/t/EFIkHdk3XT

Do you refer to the News Ticker? You have to edit your homepage and filter posts that will appear there – http://screencast.com/t/iTVXJEDcvhM

Thanks!

Hi Alin, thanks for getting back to me.
I’ve tried both methods of trying to create the sidebar and neither is working for me.

I went to Template Settings > Blog and posts Template and in the sidebar dropdown box I created a Custom Sidebar, previously I had it set on defaut. The demo categories are not listed on mine because I haven’t installed the demo.

I then went to Appearance > Widgets.
I clicked on the Custom Side box I created and added widgets including Tag Cloud and Calendar. However nothing appears on the sidebars in post pages.

I then went to Appearance > Widgets clicked on Block 1 and added it to my Custom Sidebar and tried to customise it and add widgets but still it doesn’t appear on post pages.

I also tried the custom sidebar method but still nothing. Your instructions are what I had originally tried to do.

By no means am I an experienced web developer, but for the past few years I have been installing and setting up WordPress themes just by following the instructions. I’m so frustrated as I have spent many hours on this and can’t resolve it!

Please help me get the sidebar working.

Hi,

If you set sidebar from Blog and post template – http://screencast.com/t/7R5Rh4Gd2 it should appear on your posts, but please make sure that you use default on your backend articles settings(where you edit/add posts) – http://screencast.com/t/krKAZGk7
Also do you have any sidebars for your category pages? If you do, that sidebar set for category page will overwrite Blog and Post template. All post from that specific category will have the same sidebar(sidebar that you set for your category page) – http://screencast.com/t/dsKojj0pS
Also please check this it may help to understant how it works – http://screencast.com/t/lGz2kpnw
Paste also a link and some screenshot with your settings. Let me know!

Thanks!

Hi Alin

I appreciate your help which I followed and with a bit of trial and error helped me resolve the problem! I incorrectly thought the homepage sidebar and default sidebar are the same. The confusion came because they are both adjusted using different methods. So I’ve explained it in simple steps for me to understand, to help any other newcomers, and to ask if you can tell me if I am wrong about anything!

The Homepage sidebar is different from the Default sidebar.
To customise the Elements/widgets in the Homepage sidebar go to the Pages – Homepage
To customise the widgets in the Default Sidebar go to Appearance – Widgets – and add remove widgets in the Newspaper default box.

To set a default sidebar go to Blog and Posts Template. In the box choose Default.

To set a universal custom sidebar go to Blog and Posts Template. In the box create a new custom sidebar, then choose it. Then go to Pages – Post Page and in the Custom Sidebar box choose the Custom Sidebar.

However some of the Elements in the Homepage sidebar (such as the Social Counter) are not available in the Widgets section. Is there away to duplicate them across so they can appear in the default sidebar?

Thank you!

Hi,

I think that we should rename Default Sidebar as maybe it creates confusion. Theme comes with a default sidebar in Widgets section called Newspaper default.
For your Homepage (or another page) you can use Widgetised Sidebar you can set what sidebar to display – http://screencast.com/t/EFIkHdk3XT you can choose Newspaper default or a custom sidebar. Or you can directly add blocks in sidebar position – http://screencast.com/t/dm3hdzWNP0P
For your articles you can create and set a sidebar(Default -Newspaper Default or custom sidebar) from Blog and Posts Template and it will be displayed on all of your articles, please note that it will be overwritten if you set a different sidebar for each post – http://screencast.com/t/rsOt6tYxZCLV
All sidebars can be found in Appearance > Widgets to add/remove widgets – http://screencast.com/t/AfXRq0edEtl also the Social Counter can be added from Widgets – http://screencast.com/t/HGeAeMp7Q0d3

Hope this helps!
