How do I hide certain categories

I have a few categories that will not have featured images and I wish to treat them differently. I do not want them to appear on any of the homepage, I wish to show them only on a certain separate custom page.

eg: Create a new page and only show posts from a certain category (without featured post) and keep the posts in that category hidden from the home page.. I can’t seem to find an easy way to do this. I’ll keep looking.

Never mind.. I just worked it out.. (slaps forehead). Always the way!!

How did you do this? I need to know 🙂

Let’s assume you’re wanting to hide a particular category from the home page.

1. Open up the honmepage “page”.
2. Scroll down past main page information down to the sectioned entitled “Home Page Loop Filter”.
3. You should see “Category Filter” – leave that on All categories.
4. Below this field, you should see “Multiple categories filter:”. You’ll need to list the numbers of all the categories you DO want to show – just exclude the ones you don’t want to see. eg; Say you have 20 categories, and you want to show 19 of them; you want to exclude Category 20….. You’d list 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19…..

You can use this same methodology to exclude certain categories from the various widgets,etc.

If you’re wondering how you can find out a category number from its name, there are a few ways;

1. You can go check out the wp_terms table.
2. You can write your own code to reveal it
3. From the admin panel, go to Posts > catgeories. Mouse over each of the categories, and the URL will have an attribute with a number in it – this number is the associated category number.

NOTE: In my example i listed 1,2,3,..19… In reality, your first Category may well start at 3.

Also, if you have hidden a category from the home page and you don’t want to show a featured image when they browse articles from that text only category, you can cheat by setting each post type for that text only category to a Gallery post type and it should just come up as text with no big grey blank box at the top.

Is it possible to have a page displaying posts from a category that does not have featured images? At the moment even when I don’t have a featured image the page still makes room for the image on every post which I don’t want. Is there a way round this?

When posting in that category, look on the right hand side – you should see a post type section.. If you set it as a “gallery” post type, it will not show a featured image, with a big blank spot if you set it as a gallery post. This is useful, if you have certain categories, or newspaper columns that do not need an image (ie: text only articles – yes, Tagdiv team, there are certain articles out there, where we simply cannot get images – lazy posters, without cameras – perhaps.. I can’t work out any other way to get these articles online with no image, without resorting to cheating..) it would be great if we had a way to get articles up with no images, and not have to worry if they didn’t have a”featured image” – happy to exclude those particular posts from the various home page reels. Feature request? Exclude posts with no featured image from home page reels? Not the underlying category – only those that do not have a featured post… Perhaps also a “text only” post type.. 🙂

I mean featured image… As opposed to a featured post!

To show text only posts on a separate page, you could do this:

1. Use a menu – list all your main categories as separate items in your menu. It’s a win win – the posts still get indexed, and your readers can find them via top menu navigation.

2. Set all posts in your text only category as “gallery” post types (on the right hand side of each post, you can set what type of post you are submitting).

3. On all your widgets and reels, list all category types that have images, and exclude the categories that don’t need images. See previous comments in this thread for more info on this..

I don’t think I properly explained myself, this is the page in question http://tinyurl.com/o6zcxex There is a 300 gap between the article and the side of the page which I am trying to get rid of, do your instructions show me how to get round this as I tried them but couldn’t get it to work?

I am going to use a sidebar and that solves my issue. Thank You for all your help.

If you have the blank spot on the right, can’t you just change the “Sidebar Position” (Under Page Template settings when editing that page, in the settings section below your page data) to “Full Width”….

This would remove the blank spot if you had no Sidebar, I would have thought.

I think by default, “Sidebar Position” is set to “Default Position” inside each page.

i want to prevent certain categories from showing in the side drop-down widget. the “hide category” under the ‘individual category settings’ in the theme panel is not working. kindly help!

Old post – but in case anyone doesn’t know, if the category that you don’t want to show has an id number of 12, you can simply write “-12” in the filtering for categories and it will now show all but category 12.
