Currently, if you upload a featured image for a post, the theme scales it down to 640×459 will it be possible to bypass or at least increase this?

The theme use a specific thumb size for each post template that’s why the featured image is cropped. I am not sure what post template you’re using, but if you want to have a bigger image try a post template which have a full width thumb for featured image, for example: post templates 4, 5, 6. If you want a different image size than existing ones you will need to register a new thumb size in td_config.php file: http://screencast.com/t/N8O8B4Undqr You can use theme API to do that: https://forum.tagdiv.com/api-thumbnail-introduction/ Also you will need some css customizations will be necessary such that the new thumb to be displayed well on post.
