How do ~~ [special filters]~~ of the category filter in the block filters work?

I feel certain I’ll benefit from understanding special filters – everything is so useful. But I don’t even know where to start to understand them – context – who is aiming to do what, where?

The documentation at https://forum.tagdiv.com/flex-block-settings-guide/ only states “Category Filter – Choose a specific category for the block from a drop-down menu containing all the existing categories.” Doesn’t mention the special filters.

I’m mystified. If I select “Current category” – it must know what the current category is – how does it know ? Is it to be used on a page where there is a category posts loop? because if i simply set a category in the Multiple taxonomies filter I get multiple categories.

Be great to get a full explanation.

Thanks!

Edit – sorry in my final paragraph I meant that the category tag displayed is not necessarily the one set – but the posts are of course posts in that category, not multiple categories as such. But my main point is that nothing “special” happens – I could achieve the same effect by selecting the category in the category pull down.

Hello!

When you use the special filters you should place the shortcode/element (flex block) in the desired template in order to have effect: https://www.screencast.com/t/26s82FuUvqBw
For example: if you have a category template assigned on all the categories you have ( global template), then it is very useful to use a special filter category – current category in order to display the posts from the current category. In this mood you won’t have the same posts on each category page.

Hope that is more understandable now!

Thank you!

OK, it does not seem to work.

I will work through the steps I have taken and you can see where I have gone wrong.

1. I am using the Category template of magazine pro.

2. In View mode, I click on a category tab on a post and it takes me to a page using the Category template. (It shows “Global Category template – Magazine PRO” at the top left).

3. I then click on the green “Edit with TagDiv Composer” button on the WordPress top right menu bar. The Welcome to TagDiv Composer side bar opens.

4. On the right side of the page I have a block I have titled “Latest articles”.

5. I want it to just show articles in the category selected. (This is just a test of the features I am trying to understand, since there is no point doing this here, because the post loop can show the articles latest first.)

6. I click on the “latest articles” block (Its a flex block 1)

7. I click on filter and select the special filter “Category – Current category”.

8 Save and view.

9. I click on a category tag and check the first article shown in “Latest articles”.

10. It shows a post that is not in the category. Fail.

I have misunderstood somewhere.

Grateful for all your help.

Hello!

Ok, so it should work like this: https://www.screencast.com/t/4UXnCsbmXUW
I edited the category tech and I tested the posts which are displaying where I set the filter and those have the tech category.
Please re-check and let me know the results!

Thank you!

Worked perfectly. I think I’m getting the idea now. Much appreciated. If I use it in a side bar of a post I guess it will pick up only the categories that the post is assigned to?

Hello!

For example, add a flex block in a post template go to the filter tab of the element’s settings and from the dropdown category filter you can choose between: Single – More from author, Single – Related by category, Single – Related from tags. Those special filter will work as expected.
In your case you should use Single – Related by category and this will pick up more posts that has the category the same with the current post.

Thank you!
