In order to activate widgets simply set them up on your page as you can see it here: https://www.screencast.com/t/472mY36s678q and after that from Appearance – Widgets you can set up the content of your sidebar.

I’m curious about this as well. Not having any kind of blocks in widgets keeps me from moving forward with deactivating the Standard Pack.

That makes a lot of sense. I didn’t think about doing the sidebar in pages and cloud templates themselves.
