How to Install Child Theme?

I feel like an idiot, but the Child theme didn’t automatically install on the other themes we use. I’ve read the documentation but still don’t understand how to load it and use it. Help!

Hi!

Do not feel like an idiot: you’re just asking what you don’t know:-)

As for the child theme, you just need to upload to your /wp-content/themes folder both themes, main theme and child theme (unzipped). Then, just activate child-theme (NOT main). Et voilà: you can use it as you would normally do.

To make it clear: upload and activate child-theme unzipped folder, as you would do with any other other theme but, in this case, you need to upload (but NOT activate) the main theme, too.

Hi,

I’ve just set up the child theme for Newspaper version 6.7.1 but getting an issue where the default sidebar now appears in the footer.

This is despite the fact that I have yet to make any changes in the Child Theme…I have literally set it up as I normally would do with just a style.css to check it works and got this result. I then used the child files from the latest download on Theme Forest and get the same result.

Any ideas?

Sorry – Just to more finely describe the issue above…on pages where I do have the Default sidebar it appears in the footer and does not appear where it should. Additionally, on pages where I do not have a default sidebar it still appears in the footer.

Hi

Thanks for reporting this. I’ve forwarded to theme’s developer and they will investigate it in shortest time possible.

Sorry for inconveniences.
Thanks!

Hi Andrei,

Is there any update on this? Do you have the same results as myself? Can I help by posting anymore information?

Hope I do not sound impatient although I was hoping to get this new site live by the end of the week.

Thanks

🙂

Hello wwth,

We know about the problem which was caused by the latest version of the WordPress (V.4.5). We noticed that the widgets from the sidebar were moved in the footer section. As a temporary fix, please check your Widgets area from your panel and please simply move the widgets from Footer 3 to the Newspaper default, like this -> http://screencast.com/t/nK2tEqMuORO
We have added this issue to our list of fixes and we will fix it in near future update.

Thank you for the message!

I have been running my website with the theme, not a child theme. I have only made CSS changes within the custom CSS pane in the Theme Panel. Do you recommend that I create a child theme instead? I figured that since I’m not customizing the CSS beyond this, that there wouldn’t be any need. Please advise. Thanks!

Hello travisnw,

If you have not done some customization through code, it is not necessary to make the child theme because your settings will be loaded in your database and in the next update you will not loose them.

Thank you for the message!
