After I installed the newspaper theme into my existing blog which got about 1000 posts, I don’t know where to start.
I tried to create a page from the default template but it doesn’t apply on the landing page, the blog page ( hme ) is still the same like before.
what can i do? and how to change the ratio of the image to be 1:1 square thumbnail ?

Tagdiv support is closed weekends, and back Monday. If you have not already done so the theme docs right side this page are greatvplace to start for step by step on theme options, setting up home page and default post template, etc.

And is it possible to turn the thumbnail / image into 1:1 ration?

The theme uses the add_image_size() function and the featured image is cropped to different sizes, for each image are created thumbnail to be used on module. Here you can find all sizes(including the size used on post pages) – http://screencast.com/t/aWvLdtvDghW2

Glad that you managed to make it!
You can send and email at contact@tagdiv.com or write here on the forum about this.
If you have added more image size in the config file you will have to edit the modules to use a specific size(they cannot be edited from WP Editor, you have to do this via ftp). Please note that your custom modifications to the files will be overwritten when you’ll update the theme.
