The default style is simply too awful for my purposes. Why is this unreadable, ugly typeface the default?
i change this on my sites by simply adding css over ride, use inspector in chrome to find css, then add new css to customizer or theme panel
I’m afraid I will break my site by adding CSS. How do I get to override existing code?

You can change the style to Quotes https://i.imgur.com/sjcAXQT.png and then your style will be applied.
You can use the custom code CSS for blockquotes and set the custom code in Theme Panel -> Custom Code -> Custom CSS.

I would like to change to a font that IS NOT ALL CAPS as is the default.
