IIS 404 showing instead of theme's 404 page

Hey,

I’m running the latest versions of both WordPress and the theme (6.6.4) hosted on a server running Microsoft-IIS/8.5.

The problem I’m having is that when users browse to an in-existent URL eg: http://www.domain.com/bad-url , the IIS Error page is displayed, rather than the theme’s 404 page.

How can I solve this?

Thanks & Regards,
Mike

If it happens with all WordPress themes, and not just this one, then you likely have some kind of server over-ride or domain setting which doesn’t allow “custom error documents.” I run Linux, so not sure.

This is not typically a theme issue as the 404 page is served via WordPress rewrites when the WordPress system is loaded. If the server is over-riding the php loading of WP instead, not specific to any one theme or in fact WP.

Not sure that helps. …

(( I don’t work here . . . ))

Hello,
Please try it on a wp default theme like twentyfifteen and see if the 404 page is still the same. If it is, then please contact your hosting provider.
Thank you!

Hey guys,

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

I activated the default ‘twentysixteen’ theme, and the problem persisted. So indeed, the problem was with the Web Server itself, and not the WordPress framework, or even less, the theme.

I got in touch with my Web Hosting’s Support team, and they fixed the problem by adding a couple of lines in the web.config file.

So in short, the problem was resolved. It was an issue with my web hosting provider – not the theme.
Thanks to all for your help.

Regards,
Michael
