1) I thought the thumbnail related issue was only applicable if we switch from another theme to Newspaper but recently I noticed the featured image on big grid leaves gray space at the bottom on NEW posts. https://gyazo.com/fa90162472c393d6a889de9956b54a3e I tried disabling plugins that I thought could be causing the issue but it doesn’t make any difference. I have NOT upgraded to Newspaper’s latest release. Does it make any difference?
2) If I don’t use third party plugins like Thumbnail Upscale, will the theme take care of upscaling newly uploaded images to fill the grid in NEW posts?

This issue usually comes from uploading images that are smaller than the container. The theme crops images but it does not enlarge them. Your images need to be at least the size of the thumbnail used for your grid.

you can use the thumbnail upscale plugin as it will enlarge images to fit the containers but you need to also regenerate thumbs afterwards.

Thanks for the clarification. My thumbnail upscale plugin is on but for some reason it doesn’t seem to work. Not your fault :-). Looks like it may be easier to just create a bigger size image for the biggest grid as the issue could be with Visual Composer and not with the theme.

The thumbnail upscale plugin needs the regeneration of the thumbs. After you have it active, please run ‘force regenerate’ and check again.
