What is the recommended image dimensions to upload as a Featured Image for a post. Id like to ensure continuity across all posts as much as possible.

Depends on which template you’re using. Check the image sizes noted for each template, and then choose the size used for that. Then let system make anything smaller for thumbs. For sizes larger, you can upload to that size if needed on case by case basis.
At least that’s what I do 🙂
Where are the image sizes noted. I’m using newsmag
a) on the theme settings for turning thubnails on
b) on the web, such as in Chrome, you can use F12 console inspector to look at the image size “rendered” on the page
c) on the web, with Chrome, you can inspect any image, by right-mouse-click ‘inspect’ to open console: so, if I do that on, say the avatar of your photo here on forum:

also, in Chrome inspector, in right box, there will be at very bottom an “illustration” of the image and padding div, showing the dimensions as rendered.
