index.php before category name

I have 3 Newspaper theme-based sites, and on all of them the category path is going like this

http://www.name.com.category/business

When I installed the COVID-19 theme I discovered that the category goes like

http://www.name.com/index.php/category/business/

What caused this index.php category? Is it safe?
