I’m wanting to inject code on an individual category page (in this case, to have an ad show above posts). How would I achieve this?

Hi palsys, if this code need to be use only for specific category page, then it must be set with some custom code, because the theme do not have an option for this. Also the code must be set in the theme files.
Another solution will be to use a dedicate ad plugin some of them have the ability to control where and when to display ads. If you want you can try some of them:
