Should I use auto ads or should I manually place every code?

You can use both, the auto ads need to be set only once per page, therefore you can set it in the header.

After 2 years using auto ads; my input here would be that be aware that auto ads will dump ads above your menu bar, in middle of story lists in sidebar, up to five times inside your story making photos a bit wonky by having sometimes more ads than article images, and a slide up from bottom, as well as issue making bottom of page 20 feet long below your footer which should nest to page bottom. In process of updating our sites using newsmag to new version (still using late 2018 version!), but will be going back to manual insertion of ads in preferred locations, we choose, to not overly ‘pollute’ pages making them almost unreadable. However, I did make an extra $300 last year from the ad pollution, but it pains me to look at my own articles right now. AdSense putting 20 ads on page is why ad blockers are now so popular! Just some feedback. 🙂
