I loaded the theme on top of content and did the regen as well. Pics are still not perfect, although there are a few grids I can use where the pics look manageable. Should I just not expect that all of the themes grids will work with my content and limit myself to the few that display properly? Or is there a way to fix this?

Not sure how to post pics here, but it’s pretty easy to see on the page that he pictures don’t fit. Some grids work but not all.

I have inspected your website and I did not saw any problem with your images on blocks. All of these seems to work as expected and I did not saw any image which does not fit the thumb. Please provide some useful screenshots with the problem so I can identify it. Also, before this, you should use Thumbnail Regenerate or Force Regenerate to fix this problem if this will appear.
