We recently purchased newspaper 8 to get a license for support, plus we’re building a new site.
However, the current site it on 6.5.1, and the previous developer is long gone (we all know how that goes). I was wondering if the Newspaper 8 license key would activate on 6.5.1 for the time remaining on the existing site?

Yes, this is possible but we do not recommend using the Newspaper 6.5.1 because this is an old version and could appear some bugs through the theme. Only you should use the latest theme version if you want to bring best theme results.
