Or do we need to use a 3rd party plugin

If you have the general modal image active, then depending on the post style you use, it will open in a lightbox: http://screencast.com/t/gLrqlrdW4L
But this does not apply on all post styles. Some are not clickable so there is no link at all on the featured image (in this case no lightbox as well) Please check this option on multiple post styles to see how it works.
You can see this on our live demo. On this post template the featured image opens in a lightbox: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper/120-er-visits-linked-synthetic-wordpress-nyc-past-week/

What I was exactly looking was if a page has a block with a featured image of a post & if that featured image is clicked as in http://www.screencast.com/t/lNJUrPI67e it should open it as a lightbox shown in http://www.screencast.com/t/JoWkI3y0

Hello Rana,
Unfortunately blocks were not designed to work like that. The block shows the featured image and the excerpt of the post and if the image or title is clicked, it will open the post, not the image itself. Unfortunately in this situation, the plugin solution does not work as well as our blocks are custom made so plugins cannot recognize the code. If you wish to change this behavior, you will have to hire a freelancer to help out as the code will have to be modified in order to achieve this.
