Hello, whenever I link to a file (pdf in my case) I get the error “Image #2 cannot be loaded” from the browser. This happens with any kind of link, whether relative or absolute.

I guess that you are referring to the Image Light Box on the Modal image, right? So, if you use TD Composer just copy the image URL (https://www.screencast.com/t/ajO2CZqGlgK) and paste it in the Single image > General > Image link https://www.screencast.com/t/yCBE2COZI
If you make it simple post after add media and choose your image click on it (on image) and click on edit button Click the Modal image on and select from the tagDiv image style Center Full width and click update https://www.screencast.com/t/krhUdxXs2mts.
