I’d like a menu item that will enable the user to navigate to a specific bbPress forum. Cannot find any information on how to do this. Ideas:
– Create a page with the correct shortcake? If this is the way to go, how do I find the forum id for [bbp-single-forum id="?"]
– Create a link to the forum page? If this, can I create a link relative to my site so it will work both in test and production?

Yes, this is possible. If you have created a forum and then you have to go to the menu area, you will see the option to add your forum to the menu bar as menu item, like this -> http://screencast.com/t/rpyopkn4owH

From Appearance → Menus I don’t have a Forums option. And I see that you also have Books, Genres, and Authors which I do not. Have I turned off something?

Please ensure that you have instal correctly the bbPress and then try to do a forum active and check again the Menus area and that option should be active.
