We were starting a project to use Yoast to fix up our pages that lacked good Meta Descriptions for better SERP display. Right now a tool like Screaming Frog reports most of our content pages have no Meta Description. But my intern noticed that when displaying the source code that this line:
<meta property=”og:description” content=”
picks up the first 300 or so characters of the on-page copy. Is this being populated by Newspaper? Ultimately we will use Yoast to write better optimized Meta Descriptions but just want to know how this gets there and why (if you know) Screaming Frog or Aherd report the page as having no Meta Description.

Yes, Newspaper Theme has been built with the help from Yoast. The best way would be to write your meta in the SEO Yoast, that will replace the Newspaper Theme one.
