Hi
We have noticed that Newspaper itself seems to ignore the canonical url of an article. We have articles that have up to three different url’s within the site. Normally WordPress redirects an article with a different url to the correct slug / canonical url, but in our case that doesn’t happen. The problem is that Google Analytics is also reporting views on three different url’s. Can you provide us with tips on how to fix this or a fix?
Example:
On the homepage of our site we have published an article. In the big grid this article links to https://indebuurt.nl/delft/nieuws/nieuw-in-delft/enorm-foodpark-verrijst-a4/ and it also opens the article on that url. However, when I hover over that same article on a sub category, the link points to https://indebuurt.nl/delft/ondernemersbijdragen/enorm-foodpark-verrijst-a4/. On another sub category page it links to https://indebuurt.nl/delft/winkelen/enorm-foodpark-verrijst-a4/. In both cases however it opens up https://indebuurt.nl/delft/nieuws/nieuw-in-delft/enorm-foodpark-verrijst-a4/ when clicked.
Another article however shows the same behaviour, but open in a second url. This causes this article to have to different url’s https://indebuurt.nl/delft/wonen/leuk-voor-de-heb-oude-station-delft-te-koop/ and https://indebuurt.nl/delft/nieuws/opmerkelijk/leuk-voor-de-heb-oude-station-delft-te-koop/ – without WordPress redirecting the articles to the desired slug / canonical.
Attached are several images to illustrate what I mean.

Hello indebuurt,
Far as I know, this type of problem has been fixed in the meantime. Please ensure if you are using the latest version of the SEO Yoast (v.3.3.2) Also, please try to update the theme to the latest version of it (Newspaper 7.1.1), clear all your caches and test it again and check the results. For more references for this, please consult here -> https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/4328
Thanks for your understanding!
Thanks for the reply and information. We have updated the theme and Yoast SEO plugin, but we are still seeing posts with two different url’s in the statistics. We have for example this article:
– https://indebuurt.nl/delft/doen/pokemon-go-hype-ook-delft/
Both links refer to the same article, but the canonical link (and thus also the primaray category settings) are ignored since both url’s exist without one of them redirecting to the other.
Google Analytics is getting confused with the article pageviews because of this, and that is of course not a good thing. Any other idears on what might be causing this?

Hello indebuurt,
Please try to disable all the active plugins, leave just Visual Composer and Seo Yost plugin to active, clear all your caches, purge CDN files if you are using the CDN system and install only the plugins that come bundled with our theme and rule out the conflicting plugins.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for your understanding!
