Need help finishing a Pinterest-style page

I am using a 4 column page, each column has a Block 3 inside (also looking at using some Block 8).

I want the thumbnails to be taller than they are wide. At the moment they are 232px wide and 113px high. I want them to be closer to 290px high. I saw the post about going into functions.php ( http://screencast.com/t/NxiuYIwql9h ) but I can’t see the 232 x 113 size there to change.

I would also like control of the headline type size and also the excerpt size in Block 8.
