Need to change the visible section of an image of a thumbnail

Hello, first time poster here. (loving this theme btw)
My issue is with custom cropping thumbnails. Please see these screenshots:

This is what the full image looks like (1:1 ratio – featured image):

So I cropped it using wordpress’ media tool to no avail:

I’m using latest chrome broswer, already cleared my cookies/cache, and installed the regenerate thumbnails plugin, ran it, still didn’t work. Deleted image, reuploaded new image, cropped again… still no change.

Nothing seems to be working as it still shows the thumbnail auto-cropped from the center. What am I missing?

there is a great plugin which I’ve recommended somewhere on here for managing how images are cropped …

okay … found it … this works for me:
http://wordpress.org/plugins/thumbnail-crop-position/

(NOTE: I have not tested this with latest version of theme, and have not used it since latest version of WP … may not work ?)

Thanks Christopher, it’s a step forward, but some of these images need precise selection. I’m just wondering why the wordpress tool isn’t working as it should?

Would be great since it let’s one select the exact area needed.
Are there any other ways to get it working with this theme?
