In the menu settings, it says Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu. What does this mean? Can you give an example?

It means that if you have a new page after creating that menu.
It means that in your Top Menu, when you create a new page for instance yoursite[dot]com/new-page. It adds automatically itself without you doing it manually.
