I went with the default Newsmag Theme and originally it was showing the same layout as the demo. Now it is configured weird and not sure what is going on. In addition to that I am not sure how to control posts with specific categories. If anyone has advise or tips please advise.

Also I guess that you are referring to the blocks with specific category here you can display a specific category in block settings: http://screencast.com/t/zGS8KSMc2F
