Hi Radu,
which themre is the best?:) i boght previously newspaper but then i purchased newsmag, but right now it seems like newspaper is better then newsmag:) obviosly i want to have the fastest, smoooth, google friendly theme:) will newsmag be as good as the newspaper is now?:)
Hi,
both themes share the same core and API and in the future we will improve them. It really depends if you require a site that is a bit wider and not boxy or a site that is not that wide. Newspaper also has a couple of more features (like categories that are easier to customize, big grids etc) but the theme is also a bit more expensive.
We plan to bring a lot of features to Newsmag soon and we will also be very careful to keep compatibility with the older version.
I love Newsmag as it is; just would like some options to streamline code, which the LESS compile method will solve for many things, thankfully. However, a “style2.css” and “functions2.php” kind of thing with all the bbpress, woocommerce, and other such things removed, would be super duper cool. Being able to just rename the 2 files to make them the default to cut the bloat for pure magazine sites would be on my happy camper list 🙂
Oh, and option to have the categories print bottom of page with tags vs top of page, which seems to cause a problem with pesky Google News (they pick up the categories for some reason as part of headline sometimes when printed above the headline). I am either turning them off, or manually moving them in the template file — not big deal, but some folks will cry about having to touch the code, as you well know.
@Chris
1. After we fix all the issues in the themes, we plan to separate the styles. Is not that simple.. because we have to compile multiple css files on deploy and the theme should know to load them as needed.
2. I will have to search a bit on google and see what the problem can be. Unfortunately we cannot test this live with google news.
Anecdotal: We had it happen across three websites using Newsmag where the [category] bugs were above headline and Google News would grab those as part of headline when “scraping” the page, even though the sites have proper news sitemaps and meta data. ON some of our 10 year old sites (part of original GN beta launch!), it seems they still sometimes ‘scrape’ vs ‘pull’ which is dumb, but it’s their little ecosystem.
So you can see here, I just “moved” them down with the ‘tags’ (old skool placement!)

Nothing wrong with theme – it’s just Google News sometimes doesn’t use the XML sitemaps that Webmaster tools shows having properly captured content with no errors.
